Speed Up Your Android Phone in Under 5 Minutes

You used to love your Android phone, but now that it has slowed down considerably, the bloom is off the rose. When you hit the home button or launch a new app, it takes what seems like an eternity to switch to the new task or back to the desktop. Maybe your device has become so slow that letters appear a second or two after you type them. Fortunately, you can speed up your phone in less than 5 minutes if you use these simple tips. Talk about a quickie!

Editor's Note: The menus, particularly the settings, may look different on your phone than in the screen shots below, which were taken on a couple devices with different versions of Android. However, the steps are the same.

Clear your App Cache (30 seconds)

Over time, your programs write to the app cache on your phone and eat up precious system resources while slowing everything down. To purge the cache:
1. Navigate to the storage menu in Settings. Here you'll see exactly how much cache space is in use.

2. Tap Cached Data.

3. Hit Ok to confirm the deletion.
You can also use a third-party app such as App Cache Cleaner, which will automatically purge your cache automatically on a regular schedule.

Disable Bloatware (60 seconds)

Your phone can come preloaded with as many as two dozen apps from the carrier and third parties such as Amazon. If you don't use these apps, you should get rid of them, because they can run in the background, even if you've never opened them. For example, a recent Verizon phone we received had the NFL Mobile app in memory at all times, right out of the box.
Unfortunately, unless you have rooted your phone (a complex process that likely voids your warranty), you can't delete preloaded apps. But you can "disable" them so that they can't run in the background, update themselves or appear in your app drawer. To disable an app:
1. Navigate to the Applications Manager in Settings. You may have to tap Applications and then Application Manager.

2. Swipe over to the "All" tab to see a complete list of apps on your phone.

3. Select the app you want to get rid of.

4. Tap Disable or Uninstall. If you tap "Uninstall" and then the button changes to say "Disable," tap it again to disable.

5. Hit OK.

Increase Chrome's Memory Limit (60 seconds)

By default, the Chrome browser uses uses only 128MB of available RAM, but you can quadruple that limit and get smoother performance as a result. To increase Chrome's RAM usage:
1. Navigate to chrome://flags/#max-tiles-for-interest-area or, if that's too much typing for you, just go to chrome://flags and scroll down until you see the "Maximum tiles for interest area" section.

2. Select 512 from the pulldown menu. You open the menu by tapping on the word "default."

3. Tap Relaunch Now.

Disable Animations (60 Seconds)

Every time you come back to the home screen or navigate around the app drawer, Android shows you some cool-looking transition effects. However, as nice as these look, they also take more time than just redrawing the screen right away. To disable animations:
1. Navigate to About Phone in settings.

2. Tap the Build number seven times. You'll get a message saying that Developer Mode is enabled. If you already have Developer mode enabled on your phone, you don't need to do this.

3. Navigate to Developer Options in settings. This menu only appears after you've enabled developer mode.

4. Select Window animation scale.

5. Set Animation to off.

6. Select Transition animation scale and Animation duration scale and set each to off.

Disable Lock Screen Animations (30 seconds)

It's really cute the first time you see your lock screen ripple like a pond when you swipe to open the phone. By the 10th time, you just don't want to wait the extra second or two for the animation. To disable lock screen animations:
1. Navigate to Lock screen in the Settings menu.

2. Select Unlock effect.

3. Choose None.

How to factory reset Android

No matter what device you have, over time your Android operating system may start to do things you don’t want – like crashing, running slower than you’d like or killing your pets. We can’t do much about that last one, but for everything else a factory reset might do the trick. Here’s how to factory reset Android.

How to factory reset Android: the obligatory warning about backups and stuff

A factory reset is designed to return your device to factory fresh condition (with a few exceptions: if you’ve upgraded Android itself you won’t travel back in time to the version your device shipped with), and that means without apps, data or your settings.
Your Google, Samsung or other account should enable you to get all your stuff back after a factory reset with the minimum of fuss, but from time to time things can go wrong. If anything is important, make sure you have a backup you can rely on, and if it’s really important, make sure you have more than one backup. There’s no sadder sound than the howl of someone who now has a device that's shiny and new but none of their data.

How to factory reset Android: the quick and easy way

In the majority of cases you’ll be able to perform a factory reset on your Android device through the Settings menu, and that’s far and away the easiest way to do it. The actual design of the screens may vary a little bit from device to device, especially when manufacturers have put their mucky fingers on stock Android to add their own artistic interpretations, but the basic procedure is the same. Here’s how to do it:
  • Go into Settings
  • Go into Personal > Backup and Reset
  • Enter your password or PIN if requested
  • Make sure Automatic Restore is checked
  • Tap on Factory Reset Data > Reset Phone
  • Again, you might be prompted for your password or PIN here
  • Tap Delete Everything
  • Choose Reboot
And that’s it. Your phone should now reboot in sparkly new condition. You can now use your Google account (or Samsung account, or other manufacturer-specific account) to get your apps, data and settings restored.

How to factory reset Android when you can’t get into the Settings screen

Resetting your device via the Settings screen is all well and good if you can access it, but if the device has frozen solid or the touchscreen refuses to accept your taps, it’s time for plan B. The good news is that Plan B isn’t much more complicated than Plan A. It just involves a little bit of fiddling with the device’s buttons.
To do it:
  • Turn off your device
  • Press and hold Volume Down and Power while the device turns itself on
  • When you see the options screen, use Volume Down to move down and highlight Recovery Mode
  • Press the Power button to confirm your selection
  • Wait for the image of the sad Android, then hold down Power. Keep it held and press and release the Volume Up button.
  • Once again, use the Volume Down button to navigate. This time you want Wipe Data / Factory Reset. Use Power to confirm the selection.
  • Use Volume Down to highlight the Yes -- Delete All User Data option. Use Power to confirm.
  • Wait a bit for the reset to do its stuff and then choose Reboot to restart your device.
Once again, the next step is to use the appropriate cloud account to restore your information.

What does the Android backup service back up and restore?

If you used the Android Backup Service to backup your device, it can restore some settings and data for you automatically after you’ve reset your device. It can backup and restore:
  • Google Calendar settings
  • Stored Wi-Fi networks and passwords
  • Wallpapers
  • Gmail settings
  • Apps you’ve installed via Google Play and backed up on the Play Store app
  • Display brightness and sleep settings
  • Language and input settings
  • Date and time
  • Some third-party app settings and data
The reason we’ve said 'some' third party apps is because the Android Backup Service can only back up apps that actually use it, and it’s up to the app developer(s) whether a particular app uses it and, if it does, what settings and data are actually backed up.
When it comes to backing up important data, documents, files or settings it’s always a good idea to assume the worst and ensure you have a backup copy of absolutely everything. Don’t assume that your favorite app uses the Backup Service and then discover the hard way that it doesn’t!
Have you had happy or unhappy factory reset issues? Does it cure all known ills, or did you find problems started to come back again? Let us know in the comments!

Download and install the latest Google Play Store APK 5.9.12 for free

The Google Play Store is free, but plenty of tablets and smartphones don't come with it pre-installed. Fortunately, it's super easy to get Google's app marketplace running on your Android device, so you don't have to worry about missing out on all the Play Store has to offer. Here is our guide on how to download and install the latest free version of the Google Play Store APK version 5.9.12, paving the way for the introduction of Android Marshmallow.

A note on Google Play Store version numbers

The numbering system for Google Play Store versions may seem a little confusing at first, but it's easy to get your head around. The versions listed below are simply the versions made publicly available by Google. If the jumps between numbers seems odd, that's simply because Google never released the ones in between.
We've also listed the dates each version appeared for your reference. Note that sometimes new Play Store versions introduce new features or delete old ones, so we've got download links for previous versions as well as details on what each new version introduces at the very bottom of this article.

The latest version of Google Play is 5.9.12. It doesn't seem to have any new additions (that we've seen so far) beyond the important new features that are essential to Android 6.0 Marshmallow introduced with the previous version.

How to install the Google Play Store 5.9.12 APK

The simplest method should already be quite familiar to you if you're an avid follower of AndroidPIT: just install the Play Store APK manually. An APK is the Android equivalent to an .exe program on your computer.
Instead of downloading an app from the Play Store, you simply install it yourself without the Play Store's help (see our guide on installing apps outside of Google Play. This is extra useful when it is the Play Store itself you want to install.
There are two ways to get the Google Play APK installed on your device: directly on your phone or with your computer. We'll do the easy option first.
  • What is an APK file?
  • How to download an APK file from the Play Store
Install Google Play (phone method)
  • Enable 'Unknown Sources' by going to Settings > Security, then ticking the box next to Unknown sources. Don't be alarmed, unknown sources are simply locations outside of the Play Store, which is critical if it's the Play Store itself that you're after. (Don't forget to uncheck this option once you're done)
  • Using the browser on your device, go to XDA Developers forum or APK Mirror to download the APK for the latest version of the Play Store.
  • You may get a message warning that 'this type of file can harm your device.' Ignore it (trust us) and tap OK.
  • Open the APK (you can tap the completed download in your notifications menu), read the new permissions (if any) that the new Play Store version requests, then tap Install.

Install Google Play (computer method)
If you don't have a data or Wi-Fi connection on your device, you can download the APK to your computer instead. The same process applies:
  • Enable 'Unknown sources' on your device.
  • Using the browser on your computer, go to XDA Developers forum or APK Mirror to download the APK for the latest version of the Play Store.
  • Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable and copy the APK over to your Android.
  • Launch it the APK, accept permissions and tap Install.

Google Play Store troubleshooting

Google Services Framework is a crucial service that lets the Play Store communicate with apps on your device – allowing for automatic updates and so on. If these functions stop working, or you experience other problems, then there may be a problem with the service, and you should clear the cache on Google Play Store and Google Play Services. To do this:
  • Go to Settings > Apps
  • Scroll down to Google Play Store, tap it, then tap 'Clear cache'.
  • Do the same for Google Play services
  • That should fix most problems you'll experience with the Play Store
Note: depending on what type of device you have, you may need to be rooted to manually install the Play Store, but that's a tutorial for another day.

What's new in Google Play

What's new in Google Play 5.9.11
The first thing you'll notice in Google Play 5.9.11 is a new pop-up window letting you know about granular app permissions in apps compatible with Android 6.0.
The team at Android Police has already done a teardown of the code and revealed further documentation for fingerprint support, an uninstall manager (probably tied into Marshmallow's RAM Manager), location-based recommendations and new visuals when refunding apps.

What's new in Google Play 5.8.11
There's not a lot that we can see, other than transitions and animations seeming a little faster on Android 5.1 Lollipop. Even though this version of the Play Store was pulled from the Android M preview 3, it still seems to be working fine on Android 5.1. If you want to play it safe though, stick to 5.8.8 for now.
What's new in Google Play 5.8.8
Not much other than a cool new hamburger menu animation. You've probably seen this elsewhere in Google apps, but when you switch from one screen to another, the three horizontal lines that take you to the navigation drawer rotate and convert into a back arrow.
